Pioneer is a Japanese corporation founded in 1937 by businessman Nozomu Matsumoto, when he first introduced the Pioneer A-8 dynamic speaker to the world.

Through its 80 years of existence, Pioneer has continuously developed and improved upon car sound devices with the goal of enhancing their customer’s sound experience.

Pioneer offers additional car devices such as the GPS navigation systems and also a series of home entertainment systems, which include TV and DVD players.

Pioneer became an all-round brand, offering many types of products.

The company wants to be the number one option in consumers’ homes, and this desire drives them to provide nothing but the best, constantly improving on their products in terms of technology and ease of use.

Let’s have a look at their current lines of product and then I’ll review four of their most popular models to see if they live up to their reputation.

In fact, if you go to this article we did about the best car speakers on the market, you’ll see that there’s a few Pioneer there, competing hand to hand with some super high-end units.

The TS-G series is uniquely designed to be different from all other series.

It’s molded with Polypropylene™—a strong and lightweight injection—in the Mica composite cone woofer.

This mechanism improves the overall sensitivity and reduces distortion.

1. Pioneer TS-A1676R

41Y3EDwOyUL. SL500

Replacing your old speakers with Pioneer TS-A1676R speakers won’t cause you any regrets.

These budget-friendly speakers are one of my recommendations as the best 6.5 car speakers you can get.

Specifications:

  • Sensitivity: 90 dB
  • RMS: 50 Watts
  • Peak Power: 320 Watts
  • Frequency Response: 32-40,000 Hz
  • 2way/3way/4way: 3-way

These speakers are easy to install with little to no modifications necessary; you don’t even have to drill holes.

The units fit well into most speaker sockets.

Re-wiring potentially needs to be performed on older model cars.

Once you have performed the gear4wheels1-20nt process you will immediately be able to hear the dynamic and sharp sounds.

When you have experienced the sound changes, you will agree that these speakers provide an improvement when compared to your previous experience.

These speakers don’t have the bass sound of a specialized woofer; however, it still produces excellent high, mid and low ranges.

Unfortunately, the speakers cannot handle 50 watts of power as stipulated. Once 50 watts of power is supplied, the sound quality begins to deteriorate.

Furthermore, the speakers require careful handling and the supplied grilles aren’t very strong.

When installing these yourself, you potentially need to use your car’s old factory grills alongside the new ones.

Pros

  • Easy installation options
  • You receive the following on purchase:
    • Instructions
    • Wire harness
    • Mounting brackets
  • All audio frequencies will be well balanced. You’ll enjoy excellent sound output, even when changing frequencies drastically

Cons

  • These speakers are powerful by themselves, however if you want extra bass, you will need to install subwoofers to provide it
  • Fragile components
  • Protective grilles aren’t sufficient

2. Pioneer TS-G1645R

These full-range speakers are the 6.5″ model from the TS-G Series. I like the 2-way design, which usually provides with better SQ than 3-way setups.

Specifications:

  • Sensitivity: 80 dB
  • RMS: 40 watts
  • Peak Power: 250 watts
  • Frequency Response: 26-27,000 Hz
  • 2way/3way/4way: 2-Way

The volume these speakers produce is impressively loud, even while using lower volume settings.

These speakers work surprising well with your stock head, so you may not even need an amplifier.

The sound you hear and the frequency response is exceptional; you can distinguish the finest sounds with little to no distortion.

This system also means you can listen to basic rock music, because the speakers provide a substantial amount of bass.

You should take note that additional devices such as subwoofers are needed if you’re someone who wants to experience a significant amount of bass.

If you need to prevent distortions and allow for more optimal and quality sound, bass blockers are needed.

The set includes:

Hardware

Wires for installation

Grille cover

This should cover all you need in an average installation, but customized projects may require additional material.

Pros

  • mmaculate sound production
  • Wide range of frequencies is supported
  • Modifications are barely needed, so it’s quick and easy to install into your existing speaker socket

Cons

  • You need bass blockers and subwoofers for optimal sound production

3. Pioneer TS-A6886R

41TW1XMEc L. SL500

If you’re looking to replace and improve on your factory speakers or your current set is blown, then the Pioneer TS-A886R is a speaker you should consider. These 6×8 inch speakers belong to the TS-A line and come in a 4-way design.

The whole TS-A line is one of my go-to choices and I’ve endorsed it many times as some of the best car speakers.

Specifications:

  • Sensitivity: 91 dB
  • RMS: 60 Watts
  • Peak Power: 350 Watts
  • Frequency Response: 28-39,000 Hz
  • 2way/3way/4way: 4-way

It’s designed to provide the best product quality and sound without any background static.

You can hear this when switching them on, because these speakers improve on other Pioneer products in terms of clarity and vibrancy of sounds.

The rubber seals around the speakers mask distortions so you can enjoy even loud music without irritation to your ears.

These speakers handle power in an exceptional manner, so you can connect them to an amplifier for without concern of blowing the speakers.

You’ll hear quality bass sounds; however, it’s not enough to provide a kick.

Depending on your preferences, additional devices such as amplifiers and subwoofers may need to be installed as well.

Pros

  • The Pioneer TS-A6886R speakers work seamlessly well with your stock radio
  • An exceptional range of frequencies is supported
  • The speakers are powerful

Cons

  • Though the speakers are easy to install, they don’t fit all vehicles.Get confirmation on compatibility before you purchase them
  • Some customers have complained about the speakers’ durability

4. Pioneer TS-D1330C

The speaker’s response frequency is beyond expectation. You’ll hear it when playing drum cymbal sounds; the sounds are sharp and clear.

Specifications:

  • Sensitivity: 88 dB
  • RMS: 35 Watts
  • Peak Power: 180 Watts
  • Frequency Response: 37-44,000 Hz
  • 2way/3way/4way: 2-Way

With a few alterations needed to install the speaker, it will easily fit into most car speaker sockets.

You can then experience the improvement in terms of:

Sound quality Customized settings via equalizers and crossovers

These features enable you to create a setup exactly in line with your personal sound requirements.

You may need to take some time to break in the system, but it will be well worth it.

Pros

  • You can adjust the speaker response
  • Many customization options
  • Exceptional tone variation
  • The yellow fabric used in the cone adds character and aesthetics to the speakers

Cons

  • This is not the most powerful speaker, so you can cause damage or distortion by supplying too much power
  • It may take time to find the perfect settings to optimally enjoy music

Final Thoughts

Leveraging 80 years of experience, Pioneer succeeds at creating good quality products inside the “affordable” bracket. While I wouldn’t call it “the best brand in car audio ever” they definitely offer good products at good prices, so they’re worth a try.
